A gas furnace makes heat by burning fuel; a heat pump moves heat and runs on electricity, and it cools in summer too. The Bay Area's mild winters are close to ideal for heat pumps, which lose efficiency only in the sustained deep cold we rarely see. A furnace can still make sense if you have very low-cost gas, existing ducts in good shape, and no interest in cooling. But for most local homes — especially those electrifying or adding cooling — a heat pump is the more flexible, efficient long-term choice, and it opens the door to rebates.
